Making reminders work

How to set reminders people actually act on — timing, wording and how many.

Two people can set the same reminder and get completely different results. The difference is usually timing and wording: a reminder that arrives when you cannot act on it teaches you to ignore it, and a reminder that says “appointment” tells you nothing you did not already half-know.

There is also a limit. Past a certain number, reminders become background noise and the important ones are lost with the rest. Fewer, better-timed reminders beat more of them, every time.

These articles are about the craft rather than any particular occasion: what time to fire, how to word something so it is actionable, when recurring beats one-off, how reminder calls compare with lists and notifications, and how to tell a legitimate reminder call from a scam — which matters more than it should.
