"Hey Claude, call me at 8am" — how it actually works

Trace what happens when you ask Claude to call you at 8am: it calls create_reminder, ReminderIt schedules it, and a real voice call rings your phone.

"Hey Claude, call me at 8am" feels almost too simple to trust. It is worth seeing the machinery underneath, because knowing what happens is what lets you rely on it.

Here is the whole chain, from your sentence to a phone that genuinely rings.

The one-line version

You type a request in plain language. Claude interprets it, calls the right ReminderIt tool, and ReminderIt does the rest: at the appointed minute it places a real outbound phone call and reads your reminder aloud in a warm, natural voice.

No app to open at 8am, no alarm to dismiss. Your phone simply rings.

What happens the moment you ask

When you say "call me at 8am," Claude translates that into a create_reminder call with the time and schedule attached. ReminderIt stores it and queues the call.

From then on the reminder lives on ReminderIt's side. You can close Claude, restart your phone, or lose your connection, and the scheduled call still fires.

Why Claude asks about your time zone

8am is meaningless without a place. That is why Claude confirms your time zone, storing it as an IANA name such as Europe/London or America/New_York, before it commits the reminder.

If Claude does not ask, tell it: "Use America/New_York." This one detail is the difference between a call at breakfast and a call an hour adrift.

A real call, not a notification

This is the important distinction. ReminderIt does not push a banner you might swipe away without noticing. It places an actual voice call to your verified number, which is far harder to sleep through or ignore.

If a call is missed or unanswered, ReminderIt can fall back to a WhatsApp message so the reminder still reaches you. Both the call and that fallback draw from your monthly allowance.

Example: 8am tomorrow, then test it now

Try: "Call me at 8am tomorrow to leave for my meeting, Europe/London." Claude confirms the zone and runs create_reminder. Ask "What is coming up?" and list_upcoming shows the queued call.

Do not wait until morning to trust it. Say "Ring my phone now to test it," Claude calls test_call, and your phone rings straight away with a sample reminder. Now you know the 8am call is real.
