The PIN gate that protects your WhatsApp reminders

ReminderIt no longer uses a PIN gate in the WhatsApp chat. Here is what protects your reminders now, and why a request for a PIN should make you wary.

Earlier versions of ReminderIt asked for a PIN before certain actions in the WhatsApp chat. That PIN gate has gone. Today there is no PIN to set, remember or type, and ReminderIt will never ask you for one.

This post explains what replaced it, what actually keeps your reminders yours, and why a message asking for a PIN or code should now make you suspicious rather than reassured.

One lock you already have

Your WhatsApp number is your ReminderIt account. WhatsApp itself confirmed that number belongs to your phone when you set WhatsApp up, and ReminderIt only acts on the chat that comes from it.

So the lock is your phone and your WhatsApp. Keep your phone locked, and consider turning on WhatsApp's own two-step verification, and the same protection covers your reminders.

What happens instead of a PIN

Rather than a code, ReminderIt reads back what it is about to do or has just done. Ask it to cancel a reminder and it tells you exactly which one; change a time and it confirms the new time in plain words.

That read-back is the check that matters day to day: it catches the everyday mistakes, like the wrong reminder or an AM/PM mix-up, before they cost you a call.

Why it protects you

A PIN added a step but also a secret to lose or leak. Without it, there is nothing for anyone to phish out of you. If a message or call ever asks you for a PIN, a code or a password "from ReminderIt", it is not us.

For night-time calls you can also switch on an optional "ask before night-time calls" check, which asks you to confirm any reminder set between midnight and 6 AM.
