Thanksgiving 2026 Travel: The Busiest Days and When to Leave
Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday, November 26. The busiest days are Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon going out and Sunday, November 29 coming home. Last year's best and worst times to drive, mapped onto 2026 dates.

Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday, November 26, so the heaviest travel days will almost certainly be Tuesday, November 24 and Wednesday, November 25 going out, and Sunday, November 29 coming home. The Sunday after Thanksgiving set TSA's single-day record in both 2024 and 2025, and last year's traffic data says the best time to drive on almost every day of the holiday week was the morning.
The AAA and INRIX forecast for 2026 is not out yet; in 2025 it was published on November 17. Until it is, last year's pattern is the best guide, mapped onto this year's dates below.
When is Thanksgiving 2026, and what is the travel window?
The US Office of Personnel Management lists Thanksgiving Day 2026 as "Thursday, November 26."
AAA measures the holiday as a seven-day window from the Tuesday before to the Monday after, a definition it has used since 2024. For 2026 that runs from Tuesday, November 24 to Monday, November 30. TSA uses a slightly longer window: in 2025 it counted from the Tuesday before to the Tuesday after.
What are the busiest days to travel for Thanksgiving?
By air, the Sunday after. In 2025, TSA screened 3,133,924 people on Sunday, November 30, which UPI reported was more than 100,000 above the previous high of 3,096,797 set on June 22. A year earlier, AP reported that TSA handled 3.09 million travellers on the Sunday after Thanksgiving 2024, also a record at the time. Before the 2025 holiday, TSA said: "We are projecting that the Sunday after Thanksgiving will be one of the busiest travel days in TSA history," and it expected to screen more than 17.8 million people across the eight days from November 25 to December 2.
By road, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, then Sunday. INRIX, the traffic data company that produces the forecast with AAA, said in 2025 that it "expects Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon to be the most congested periods before Thanksgiving Day. Travelers returning home on Sunday should expect heavy traffic most of the day."
Most people drive. AAA projected 81.8 million Thanksgiving travellers in 2025, a record, with "at least 73 million" going by car, "nearly 90 percent of Thanksgiving travelers," and about 6 million taking domestic flights.
What is the best time to leave for Thanksgiving?
Here is the INRIX best and worst driving times table from AAA's 2025 forecast, with each day moved to its 2026 date. Treat it as last year's pattern, not a 2026 forecast.
| 2026 date | 2025 equivalent | Worst time to drive (2025) | Best time to drive (2025) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tue, Nov 24 | Tue, Nov 25 | 12pm to 9pm | Before 12pm |
| Wed, Nov 25 | Wed, Nov 26 | 11am to 8pm | Before 11am |
| Thu, Nov 26 (Thanksgiving) | Thu, Nov 27 | Minimal traffic impact expected | - |
| Fri, Nov 27 | Fri, Nov 28 | 1pm to 7pm | Before 11am |
| Sat, Nov 28 | Sat, Nov 29 | 1pm to 8pm | Before 10am |
| Sun, Nov 29 | Sun, Nov 30 | 11am to 8pm | Before 11am |
| Mon, Nov 30 | Mon, Dec 1 | 12pm to 8pm | After 8pm |
The pattern is simple. On the outbound days, leave before late morning. Thanksgiving Day itself was expected to be light. Coming home, the morning again beats the afternoon, and Monday is the one day when leaving late in the evening was the better choice.
INRIX also gives peak times for busy routes. In 2025, Atlanta to Savannah on I-16 E was expected to peak at 3:30pm on Sunday, at 5 hours 16 minutes, 53% longer than usual; Boston to Hyannis was expected to peak on Thanksgiving Day itself, at more than double the normal time.
Is it cheaper to fly on Thanksgiving Day?
According to AAA's 2025 booking data, yes: "It's cheaper to fly on Thanksgiving Day itself, but the flight home is what drives up the ticket price since Sunday and Monday are the busiest return days." AAA said the average domestic round trip was about $700, and that "some travelers shorten or extend their Thanksgiving trips to avoid flying on peak days."
In 2026 terms, that means flying out on Thursday, November 26 and returning on Saturday, November 28 or Tuesday, December 1 avoids the most crowded flights, if your plans allow it.
What else should I plan for?
- Rental cars. AAA's rental partner Hertz said Wednesday was expected to be the busiest pick-up day in 2025. Collecting the car a day early, if your booking allows it, avoids the busiest counter.
- ID at the airport. TSA's advice is to bring "your REAL ID, passport, or other acceptable form of identification and have it out to show the TSA officer at the checkpoint entrance." Check this well before the trip, not the night before.
- Questions about what you can carry. TSA runs AskTSA by text at 275-872, for example to check whether a food item can go in your carry-on.
When should I set Thanksgiving travel reminders?
The dates that matter come in two groups: the booking decisions in the weeks before, and the departure times on the day. A practical schedule:
- Mid-November. Check the 2026 AAA and INRIX forecast when it is published, and adjust your departure time if your route is listed.
- The week before. Confirm the rental car, check your ID has not expired, and decide what food you are carrying.
- The night before you leave. Pack the car or bags and set your wake-up time. For a flight, our guide to what time to wake up for an early flight walks through the maths, and online check-in reminders help with the check-in window.
- The morning you leave. If you are driving on Tuesday or Wednesday, aim to be on the road before 11am.
- The return. If you are driving home on Sunday, November 29, a wake-up early enough to leave before 11am is the difference between last year's best and worst window.
How ReminderIt can help
A phone alarm is easy to dismiss when you were up late with family. ReminderIt places a real phone call at the exact time you choose and reads your reminder in a natural voice, for example "Time to get up. On the road by 8 to beat the Sunday traffic." If you miss the call, you get a WhatsApp message.
You can set it by sending a WhatsApp message (text or voice note), such as "Call me on Sunday November 29 at 6:30am to leave for home", or on the website. There is no app to install. You can also set a reminder for a family member, such as a parent driving to you, for example to set off before the afternoon rush; they confirm first before any calls go to their number.
There is a 7-day free trial with 7 free reminder calls (3 if your number is in a country where calls cost more). After that it is one plan: $7 a month, or ₹299 a month in India, with annual and 2-year options.
The short answer
Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday, November 26. Based on 2025's data, the worst times to drive are Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon (November 24 and 25) and most of Sunday, November 29, and the best time on nearly every day is before about 11am. The Sunday after Thanksgiving set TSA's single-day record two years running, while flying on Thanksgiving Day itself was cheaper. Check the 2026 AAA forecast in mid-November for route-level detail.
