Thanksgiving 2026 Prescription Refills: When to Order Before the Pharmacy Closes

Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026. Some pharmacies close, others cut their hours, and insurers often block refills that are too early. Here's how to work out your refill date and when to ask for it.

Running out of a daily medicine on a holiday weekend is stressful and avoidable. Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday, November 26. Pharmacy hours change that day, and your insurer may not let you refill as early as you'd like. The fix is to work out your refill date now and ask for the refill about a week or two before the holiday.

What pharmacies do on Thanksgiving

Hours vary by chain and by store, so don't assume. Reports from earlier years say that most CVS and Walgreens stores stay open on Thanksgiving, often with shorter hours, and that the pharmacy counter can keep different hours from the rest of the store. Pharmacies inside grocery and big-box stores such as Walmart, Costco, Kroger and Target have been reported closed on the day. Some independent pharmacies stay open.

Those reports mostly describe past years, so confirm 2026 hours on the pharmacy's store locator or by phoning the pharmacy itself. Services such as vaccines may also be unavailable that day.

Why you can't always refill early

Insurance plans usually set a 'refill too soon' point. Sources commonly cite about 75 to 80% of the previous supply used, which is around day 24 of a 30-day fill, though this differs by plan and drug. Your own plan's number is the only one that counts, so check the member portal or call member services.

If the holiday falls before your refill is due, ask the pharmacy about a vacation override. Whether you can get one depends on the plan and the medicine, and some plans limit how many you can use a year.

A week-by-week plan

  • Now: count the tablets you have left for each medicine and write down the day each one runs out.
  • By about November 9: if any runs out between November 20 and December 1, ask the pharmacy whether it can be refilled early.
  • About two weeks before the holiday: ask your prescriber about a 90-day supply if it suits you, and check whether any prescriptions have no refills left, as those need a new prescription.
  • November 23 to 25: pick up everything. Don't leave it to the day before Thanksgiving if you can help it.
  • November 26: closed or short hours. Be sure you have at least a few spare days of medicine.
  • November 27 to 29: the weekend can mean reduced hours at some pharmacies too, so check first.

If a refill is refused, the pharmacy can ask your insurer for an override, or you can call the plan. Some people pay cash and claim later, but check the cost first.

If you do run out

Call the pharmacy first, then your prescriber's after-hours line. Don't stretch or skip doses of anything important without advice from a pharmacist or doctor. For urgent needs, an urgent care clinic or your doctor's on-call service can help. This article is general information, not medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

When is Thanksgiving 2026? Thursday, November 26, 2026.

Are pharmacies open on Thanksgiving? Some are, often on shorter hours, and many grocery-store pharmacies are closed. Check your pharmacy's store locator or phone it.

How early can I refill a prescription? It depends on your plan. Many allow a refill once roughly 75 to 80% of the supply has been used. Check with your insurer.

What is a vacation override? It's an insurer's exception that lets a pharmacy fill a prescription early because you'll be away. Availability varies, so ask your pharmacy or plan.

Should I ask for a 90-day supply? It can mean fewer trips to the pharmacy. Ask your prescriber whether it suits you and whether your plan covers it.

How ReminderIt helps

The hardest part of a refill is remembering to ask before it's urgent. ReminderIt calls your phone at the time you choose and sends a WhatsApp message with Done and Snooze buttons.

Message ReminderIt on WhatsApp something like "Remind me on November 9 at 10am to ask the pharmacy about my refills" or "Remind me on November 23 at 5pm to pick up my prescriptions". There's a 7-day free trial with no card, then it's $7/month.
