Early Decision and Early Action 2026: The November 1 Deadline and the Financial Aid Dates Hiding Behind It

Many US colleges set Early Decision and Early Action deadlines on November 1, 2026, a Sunday. Financial aid forms such as the CSS Profile often have their own, slightly different dates, and Early Decision II follows in January.

If you're applying to US colleges early, November 1, 2026 is probably circled on your calendar. It's the Early Decision or Early Action deadline at many schools. What catches families out is that the application isn't the only thing due. Financial aid forms often have their own deadline, which can be the same day, a week later, or two weeks later, depending on the college. Here's how the dates usually work, and a checklist for the next ten days.

Early Decision vs Early Action, quickly

  • Early Decision (ED): binding. If you're admitted, you commit to attend and withdraw other applications. You can apply ED to only one school.
  • Early Action (EA): not binding. You get an earlier answer but can still compare offers until the usual May 1 reply date.
  • Restrictive / Single-Choice Early Action: non-binding, but limits where else you can apply early. Rules vary by school.
  • Early Decision II: a second binding round, usually with a deadline in early to mid-January.

Deadlines vary by school: some 2026–27 examples

Every college sets its own dates, so treat these as examples, not a rule:

  • Bucknell: ED I on November 1, 2026, with the CSS Profile and FAFSA due the same day; ED II on January 10, 2027.
  • University of Michigan: application deadline November 1 (Early Action), with a suggested financial aid filing date of December 15.
  • USC: financial aid deadline of November 1, 2026 for Early Decision, but November 15, 2026 for Early Action.
  • Claremont McKenna: CSS Profile due November 8 for ED I, and January 17 for ED II.
  • William & Mary: CSS Profile priority date of November 15 for ED I, and January 15 for ED II.
  • Reed: CSS Profile date of November 1 for Early Action, and January 15 for ED II.

The lesson: for each school on your list, write down two dates, the application deadline and the financial aid deadline.

Two quirks of November 1, 2026

  • It's a Sunday. School counsellors and admissions offices usually aren't available that weekend, so anything you need from them, such as a transcript, a counsellor letter or a fee waiver, should be requested well before Friday, October 30.
  • US clocks go back that morning. Daylight saving time ends at 2am on November 1. It won't change a deadline, but it's one more reason not to leave submission until the last hour. Check each school's stated cut-off time and time zone; many use 11:59pm in your own time zone, but not all.

A checklist for the last ten days

  1. Now: list every school with its application deadline, aid deadline and which forms it needs (FAFSA, CSS Profile, its own aid form).
  2. By October 26: confirm teacher and counsellor recommendations have been submitted or are on track, and that test scores have been sent if you're submitting them.
  3. By October 28: final read of essays and supplements; check activity and award sections.
  4. By October 30: submit the application and pay the fee or confirm a fee waiver, ahead of the weekend.
  5. Same week: start the CSS Profile and FAFSA if your schools need them early. Gathering parents' tax and income information takes longer than you expect.
  6. After submitting: log in to each college's applicant portal within a few days and check for missing items. Portals are where colleges tell you something hasn't arrived.

After November 1

  • Mid-November: many later aid deadlines, such as USC's EA and William & Mary's ED I, fall around November 15.
  • Mid-December: many ED and EA decisions are released.
  • Early to mid-January: Regular Decision and ED II deadlines, often with CSS Profile deadlines close by.
  • If admitted ED: follow the school's instructions on deposits and withdrawing your other applications.

Common questions

How ReminderIt helps

With several schools, each with two or three dates, things slip, especially when the aid deadline is different from the application one. ReminderIt rings your phone at the time you choose, with a natural voice reading the reminder, and sends a WhatsApp message with Done and Snooze. If you miss the call, it tries once more about 5 minutes later.

Set it up by messaging on WhatsApp in plain words, for example "Remind me on October 30 at 5pm to submit my Bucknell application" or "Remind me on November 13 to finish the CSS Profile for William & Mary". Parents can set the same reminders for themselves or a student's phone. There's no app to install, and there's a 7-day free trial with no card. After that it's $7 a month.
