Voter Registration Deadlines for the November 3, 2026 Election, by State
The voter registration deadline for the November 3, 2026 election is October 5 in Texas, Florida, Georgia, Ohio and Arizona, October 19 in California, Pennsylvania and Michigan, and October 24 in New York. Ten states' dates, and what to do if you missed one.

The US general election is on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, and the deadline to register depends on your state. In Texas, Florida, Georgia, Ohio and Arizona it is Monday, October 5, 2026. North Carolina's is October 9, California, Pennsylvania and Michigan close regular registration on October 19, and New York on October 24. Some states, including California, Michigan and North Carolina, still let you register in person after the main deadline.
USA.gov puts the general rule simply: "Depending on your state, the deadline to register to vote could be as much as a month before an election." Below are the dates for ten states, taken from each state's or county's own election office where we could open it.
What is the voter registration deadline for November 2026?
| State | Regular registration deadline | Registering later |
|---|---|---|
| Arizona | Mon, Oct 5, 11:59pm | - |
| Florida | Mon, Oct 5 | - |
| Georgia | Mon, Oct 5 | - |
| Ohio | Mon, Oct 5 (election offices open until 9pm) | - |
| Texas | Mon, Oct 5 (mail: postmarked by this date) | - |
| North Carolina | Fri, Oct 9, 5pm (or postmarked by Oct 9) | Same-day registration during early voting, Oct 15 to Oct 31 |
| California | Mon, Oct 19 | Conditional (same-day) registration, Oct 20 to Nov 3 |
| Michigan | Mon, Oct 19 (online or by mail) | In person with your local clerk, with proof of residency, Oct 20 to Nov 3 |
| Pennsylvania | Mon, Oct 19 | - |
| New York | Sat, Oct 24 (mail applications must be received by this date) | - |
A dash means the source we used did not describe a later option. Rules can change, and Pennsylvania's own calendar notes that its dates are "subject to change without notice", so check your state's election office before relying on any date here. If you live in a state not listed, vote.gov links to every state's rules, and USA.gov notes that "every state except North Dakota requires people to register."
What does "postmarked by" mean for a mailed form?
It matters which word your state uses. Texas says a mailed application "must be postmarked on or before the registration deadline," and suggests visiting a USPS counter and asking for a manual postmark so the date on the envelope matches the day you mailed it. North Carolina accepts an application "received by the county board of elections or postmarked by Oct. 9."
New York is stricter for mail: the NYC Board of Elections says applications "must be received by October 24, 2026." A form posted on October 23 will probably arrive too late. If your state uses "received by", mail it a week early or register another way.
Do I need to register again if I moved?
Often, yes, or at least update your address. The Texas Secretary of State's reminder this year was aimed at people who have not registered and at those who have moved since they last voted, and in Texas, you must be "a resident in your county of registration."
If you moved within your state, check whether your election office lets you update the address online. If you moved to a new state, you register there as a new voter, before that state's deadline.
What if I missed the voter registration deadline?
Check whether your state has a later in-person option before assuming you cannot vote:
- California: the Secretary of State lists "Same Day Registration" from October 20 to November 3, where you "conditionally" register and vote a provisional ballot.
- Michigan: from October 20 to Election Day, registration "must be done in person with local clerk with proof of residency."
- North Carolina: during early voting, October 15 to October 31, you can register and vote at an early voting site in your county, with proof of residence.
In states with no later option, missing the deadline means you cannot vote in this election, but registering now still sets you up for the next one.
What other November 2026 voting dates should I know?
A few dates from the same official sources:
| State | Date | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| California | By Oct 5 | Counties begin mailing vote-by-mail ballots to every registered voter |
| Arizona | Wed, Oct 7 | Mail ballots go out; in-person early voting begins |
| Texas | Oct 19 to Oct 30 | Early voting |
| Pennsylvania | Tue, Oct 27 | Last day to apply for a mail-in or civilian absentee ballot |
| Pennsylvania | Tue, Nov 3, 8pm | Voted mail ballots must be received by the county |
| California | Nov 10 | Mailed ballots, postmarked by Election Day, must arrive by this date |
If you are voting by mail, the dates that catch people out are the last day to request a ballot and the last day for it to be received. Our general guide to reminders for registering, voting by post and voting on the day walks through building a plan around them.
When should I set reminders?
- Today. Check that you are registered at your current address on your state's website.
- The day before your state's deadline. If you still need to register, do it then, not on the last evening.
- Your mail ballot request deadline, minus a week. If you are voting by mail, request it early.
- When the ballot arrives. Fill it in and mail it, or note where to drop it off.
- Election Day, or your early voting day. Pick a time you can protect, such as before work.
How ReminderIt can help
ReminderIt places a real phone call at the exact time you choose and reads your reminder in a natural voice, for example "Check your voter registration today. The deadline is October 19." If you miss the call, you get a WhatsApp message.
You can set it by sending a WhatsApp message (text or voice note), such as "Call me on October 27 at 7am to post my ballot", or on the website. There is no app to install. You can also set a reminder for a family member, such as a student voting for the first time; they confirm first before any calls go to their number.
There is a 7-day free trial with 7 free reminder calls (3 if your number is in a country where calls cost more). After that it is one plan: $7 a month, or ₹299 a month in India, with annual and 2-year options.
The short answer
For the November 3, 2026 election, the regular registration deadline is Monday, October 5 in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Ohio and Texas; Friday, October 9 in North Carolina; Monday, October 19 in California, Michigan and Pennsylvania; and Saturday, October 24 in New York (received by that date if you mail it). California, Michigan and North Carolina offer in-person registration after those dates. Confirm your own state's rules with its election office, because deadlines differ and can change.
