Self Assessment Paper Tax Return Deadline: 31 October 2026, and What Happens If You Miss It

HMRC must receive paper Self Assessment returns for the 2025 to 2026 tax year by 11:59pm on Saturday 31 October 2026. Missing it isn't the end: you can still file online by 31 January 2027. Here are the dates, the penalties and the 30 December tax-code rule.

If you file your Self Assessment tax return on paper, your deadline is much earlier than everyone else's. HMRC must receive your paper return by 11:59pm on 31 October 2026. That's this coming Saturday, and it's the date HMRC receives the return, not the date you post it. Online filers have until 31 January 2027. Here's how the dates fit together and what to do if you're cutting it close.

The Self Assessment dates for the 2025 to 2026 tax year

  • 5 October 2026: the deadline to tell HMRC you need to file, if you're new to Self Assessment. (Missed it? HMRC sets a deadline 3 months from its letter.)
  • 31 October 2026, 11:59pm: HMRC must receive your paper return.
  • 30 December 2026, 11:59pm: file online by this date if you want a bill under £3,000 collected through your PAYE tax code.
  • 31 January 2027, 11:59pm: the deadline for online returns, and for paying any tax you owe for 2025 to 2026, including your first payment on account for 2026 to 2027, if you make them.
  • 31 July 2027: the second payment on account, if you make them.

These dates come from GOV.UK's Self Assessment deadlines and payments-on-account pages.

Received by, not posted by

The paper deadline is about when HMRC receives your return. If you're posting it in the last week of October, allow for the post taking a few days, and keep proof of posting. Check the return is signed and complete before it goes. An unsigned or incomplete form can be sent back to you, and by then the deadline may have passed.

31 October 2026 is a Saturday, so the last working day before the deadline is Friday 30 October. Don't count on weekend delivery.

Missed the paper deadline? You can still file online

The 31 October deadline only applies to paper returns. If you can't get your paper form to HMRC in time, you can register for HMRC's online service and file online by 31 January 2027 instead. You won't get a late filing penalty as long as the online return arrives by then.

Registering for the online service can take time, because HMRC may post you an activation code, so start early rather than in late January.

The 30 December rule: paying through your tax code

If you're employed or get a company pension, HMRC can collect a Self Assessment bill through your PAYE tax code over the next tax year, instead of you paying a lump sum on 31 January. GOV.UK says all three of these must apply:

  • you owe less than £3,000 (you can't part-pay to get under the limit)
  • you already pay tax through PAYE
  • you filed your paper return by 31 October or your online return by 30 December

If your bill is small and you'd rather spread it out, that makes 31 October or 30 December your real deadline, not 31 January.

Penalties if you're late

According to GOV.UK, if your return is late:

  • an initial £100 penalty for missing the deadline, even if you owe no tax or pay on time
  • after 3 months, £10 a day, up to £900
  • after 6 months, a further 5% of the tax due or £300, whichever is greater
  • after 12 months, another 5% or £300, whichever is greater

Paying late is a separate charge: 5% of the unpaid tax at 30 days, 6 months and 12 months, plus interest. GOV.UK has a penalty estimator if you've already missed a deadline. If you had a genuine reason, such as a serious illness, you can appeal.

A simple countdown

  • This week: finish and sign your paper return, and post it by Monday or Tuesday with proof of posting. Or decide to switch to filing online.
  • Early December: if you're filing online and want your bill collected through your tax code, aim to file well before 30 December.
  • Early January: check your online account, work out what you owe, and set aside the money.
  • By 31 January: file online if you haven't already, and pay.
  • Mid-July: a reminder for the 31 July payment on account, if you make them.
