Reminders to Charge Your Electric Vehicle: Building a Consistent EV Charging Habit
EV range anxiety is usually just forgetting to plug in. A nightly reminder that rings through keeps your car charged and your mornings stress-free.

One of the most common complaints among new electric vehicle owners is range anxiety — the fear of running out of charge. But for most people, the real problem isn't range. It's forgetting to plug in overnight, then starting the day with 30% charge when you planned on 80%. A nightly reminder costs nothing and eliminates most EV charging stress entirely.
Why EV Charging Needs a Reminder System
Petrol cars have a clear visual prompt for refuelling: a gauge that moves toward empty and a warning light you can't miss. EVs have charge percentage indicators, but the prompt to act — plugging in — happens at home, in the evening, in the middle of other activities. There's no moment analogous to pulling into a petrol station.
The transition from a petrol habit to an EV habit takes 3-6 months for most drivers. During that period, a nightly reminder bridges the gap until plugging in becomes automatic.
Setting the Right Charging Reminder
The ideal reminder fires about 30-60 minutes after you typically arrive home — early enough that you haven't settled in for the evening, late enough that you've had time to arrive and unwind. For most people, 7:30pm or 8pm on weekdays is a good anchor.
The reminder message should be specific: 'Plug in the EV — check charge level and set departure time if needed.' Some EVs allow scheduled charging to start at off-peak electricity tariff times (typically midnight to 7am in the UK). If yours does, the reminder can prompt you to set the departure time rather than just plug in.
Long Trip Planning Reminders
For journeys beyond your car's single-charge range, a planning reminder the evening before is valuable. 'Long trip tomorrow — check charge, plan charging stops, download offline maps' covers the EV-specific preparation that differs from a petrol car trip.
If you use public charging regularly (apartment dwellers without home charging, or drivers who can't always charge at work), a reminder before leaving home to check nearby charging availability via your car's app or a charging network app prevents arriving at a charging point that's occupied or out of order.
Other EV Maintenance Reminders Worth Setting
EVs have fewer maintenance requirements than petrol vehicles but aren't maintenance-free. Tyre pressure matters more for EVs (tyre rolling resistance affects range significantly). Cabin air filter replacement, brake fluid check (regenerative braking reduces pad wear but fluid still degrades), and annual servicing still apply.
A reminder every 6 months to check tyre pressure and inspect tyres, plus an annual reminder for the service interval, covers EV-specific maintenance without relying on memory.
