Remember to Take Dinner Out of the Freezer: Thawing Reminders

The chicken is still frozen at 5:45 PM again. Plan dinners backwards and use a simple evening reminder so food is safely thawed in the fridge in time.

It's 5:45 PM. You open the freezer, and the chicken you planned to cook tonight is still a solid block. Dinner turns into takeaway, or a panicked search for "how to defrost chicken fast", or toast again. The plan was fine. The step that failed was the one that needed to happen yesterday.

Thawing is a small job with bad timing. It has to be done many hours before you're hungry, usually when you're thinking about something else entirely. That makes it a perfect job for a reminder that arrives at the right moment, not a note on the fridge you walk past all day.

Why thawing is so easy to forget

Most kitchen tasks happen when you're already in the kitchen. Thawing doesn't. The moment you need to act is often the night before, when you're tired and dinner tomorrow feels far away, or first thing in the morning, when you're rushing out of the door.

A few things make it worse:

  • The freezer is closed. Out of sight really is out of mind. You can't see the mince you bought on offer three weeks ago.
  • The lead time varies. A pack of prawns and a whole chicken need very different amounts of time, so there's no single habit that fits every meal.
  • Plans change. You meant to cook the fish on Tuesday, then Tuesday got busy, and now you're not sure what's left in there.

The safest way to thaw, in plain terms

Thawing in the fridge is the approach most food safety guidance recommends, because the food stays cold the whole time. It's also the approach that needs the most planning, which is exactly why a reminder helps.

As a rough guide, small or flat items (a couple of chicken breasts, a pack of mince, fish fillets) often thaw in the fridge overnight. Larger or thicker items, like a whole bird or a big joint, can take a day or more. Check the packaging, and if you're unsure, follow your local food safety advice rather than guessing.

A few habits that make fridge thawing easier:

  • Put the item on a plate or in a container on the bottom shelf, so any drips don't land on other food.
  • Freeze meat flat in bags where you can. Flat packs thaw much faster than thick blocks.
  • Label everything with what it is and the date. "Mystery meat" is hard to plan around.

Plan dinners backwards

The trick is to think about when you'll eat, then work backwards to when you need to act.

If you're cooking chicken thighs on Wednesday evening, the thawing decision really happens on Tuesday evening. If you're roasting a whole chicken on Sunday, you may need to move it on Friday. Writing down a quick weekly meal plan, even a loose one, gives you those "move it now" moments.

Here's a simple way to do it:

  1. On the weekend, pick three or four dinners for the coming week that use something from the freezer.
  2. For each one, note the day you'll cook it and how long it needs to thaw.
  3. Set a reminder for the evening before (or earlier for big items).
  4. When the reminder comes, move the item straight away. Don't wait until after the washing up.

Sample reminder wording

The best reminders are specific. "Freezer" means nothing at 9 PM. "Move the salmon to the fridge for tomorrow's dinner" is something you can act on in thirty seconds.

A few examples you could adapt:

  • "Take the chicken thighs out of the freezer and put them in the fridge for tomorrow's curry."
  • "Move the mince to the fridge now. Bolognese on Thursday."
  • "Sunday roast: move the chicken to the fridge today so it's ready by Sunday."
  • "Check the freezer and choose tomorrow's dinner."

That last one works well as a daily habit if you don't like planning a whole week. A short check each evening at the same time is often enough to stop the 5:45 PM surprise.

A simple evening routine

If you want something that runs on autopilot, try this:

  • Every evening at around 8 PM: a reminder to open the freezer and decide tomorrow's dinner.
  • If it's something big: move it that night, and set a second one-off reminder for the next evening to check how it's getting on.
  • On your shopping day: a reminder to freeze anything you won't use within a couple of days, flat and labelled.

It takes a minute a day, and dinner stops depending on your memory at the worst possible time.

When the plan still slips

It will sometimes. You'll get home late, or someone will change plans. Keep a couple of "no thaw needed" dinners in reserve: eggs, pasta with a jar sauce, a vegetable soup, or frozen items meant to be cooked from frozen according to the packet. That way a missed reminder is a small change of menu, not a crisis.

And if you often find yourself searching for quick defrost methods, take it as a sign the reminder needs to come earlier, not that you need a faster method.

How ReminderIt helps

Phone notifications are easy to swipe away when you're busy with bath time or finishing work. ReminderIt reminds you with a real phone call at the time you choose, plus a WhatsApp message with Done and Snooze buttons. If you miss the call, the WhatsApp message is still there, and ReminderIt tries the call once more about five minutes later.

You set it up by chatting on WhatsApp in plain words. For example:

  • "Remind me every day at 8pm to check the freezer and move tomorrow's dinner to the fridge."
  • "Remind me on Friday at 7pm to move the chicken to the fridge for Sunday lunch."

If you share cooking with a partner or housemate, you can add them as one of the people you remind (they accept once), so whoever is home that evening gets the call. You can pause the daily reminder when you're away and resume it when you're back, just by sending a message.

You can try it with a 7-day free trial, no card needed. Want dinner to be ready when you are? Message us on WhatsApp at https://wa.me/14786061901 and set your first freezer reminder.
