How to actually remember to take your vitamins and supplements

There's a particular kind of guilt that comes from a half-full bottle of vitamins you bought with good intentions. Supplements only do anything if you take them consistently, and consistency is exactly where most people fall down — not because they don't care, but because a daily pill is easy to forget when nothing reminds you. Here's how to make taking them automatic.

Tie it to something you already do daily

The reliable way to remember a small daily action is to attach it to an existing one — habit stacking. 'After I pour my morning coffee, I take my vitamin D.' 'With breakfast, I take my omega-3.' The established habit becomes the trigger, so you're not relying on remembering out of thin air.

Pick an anchor that genuinely happens every day at roughly the same time. Some supplements are best with food or in the morning, so choose an anchor that fits those requirements too.

Make them visible

Out of sight really is out of mind. Keep the bottle exactly where your anchor happens — by the kettle, on the breakfast table, next to your toothbrush — not tucked in a cupboard you'll forget to open. A weekly pill organiser adds a second benefit: a glance tells you whether you've already taken today's, so you neither skip nor double up.

Add a nudge for the days the routine breaks

Anchors cover normal days. The misses happen on the disrupted ones — travelling, a different morning, a weekend that doesn't follow the usual shape. For those, an external reminder keeps the streak alive. A reminder call at your supplement time is harder to ignore than a silent notification, and it says the cue out loud so it actually registers.

Set it for the time you'd normally take them and let it quietly back up your routine on the days that go sideways.

Keep it realistic

Don't aim for a perfect record — aim for a system robust enough that a single missed day doesn't derail the habit. Anchor it, make it visible, back it with a reminder, and taking your vitamins stops being a thing you have to remember and becomes just something you do.
