Giving Tuesday 2026: The Date, and the December 31 Deadline That Matters for Your Taxes
Giving Tuesday 2026 is Tuesday, December 1. If you want a gift to count on your 2026 US tax return, what matters is the date you make it, not the date the charity thanks you. Here are the dates, the rules and a simple giving calendar.

GivingTuesday always falls on the Tuesday after US Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving 2026 is November 26, so GivingTuesday 2026 is Tuesday, December 1 (one listing says December 2, but that doesn't match the rule). If you also want the gift to count on your 2026 US tax return, the date that matters is December 31, and the gift has to be made by then. Here's what to check and a calendar to follow.
The dates to know
- Thursday, November 26: US Thanksgiving.
- Tuesday, December 1: GivingTuesday.
- Thursday, December 31: the last day to make a gift that counts for 2026.
That leaves 30 days between GivingTuesday and the end of the year. It's easy to say "I'll give later" and then miss the window.
When does a gift count for 2026?
The IRS treats the new non-itemizer deduction as applying to cash contributions made during 2026, so the year of the gift is what counts.
IRS Publication 526 says contributions charged on your bank credit card are deductible in the year you make the charge, even if you pay the card bill the following year. Cash contributions include payments made by cash, check, electronic funds transfer, online payment service, debit card, credit card, payroll deduction, or a transfer of a gift card redeemable for cash.
If you plan to give by another route, such as a cheque in the post, ask the charity how it dates gifts and don't leave it to the last week of December.
You may be able to deduct even if you don't itemize
The IRS says eligible taxpayers who don't itemize may be able to deduct up to $1,000 of qualifying cash contributions to eligible charitable organizations, or $2,000 for married couples filing jointly.
Two limits worth knowing. Gifts to donor-advised funds and to supporting organizations don't count towards this deduction. And it applies to cash gifts, not to goods you donate.
Before you give, you can check the organisation with the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search tool on IRS.gov.
Keep the receipt: the $250 rule
Publication 526 says you can claim a deduction for a contribution of $250 or more only if you have a contemporaneous written acknowledgment from the qualified organization (or certain payroll deduction records).
For smaller gifts, keep a bank record or a credit card statement. Save the charity's email receipt in a folder called "Tax 2026" the day it arrives.
A simple giving calendar
- This week: decide a total for the year and pick two or three charities. Check each in the Tax Exempt Organization Search.
- Before Thanksgiving: ask your employer if there's a matching gift scheme and how to claim it.
- December 1: make the gift, then save the receipt straight away.
- Mid-December: if you want to give more, do it now, while the charity's website and your bank are not busy.
- December 31: final day. After that, any gift counts for 2027.
- January: match your receipts against your list before you file.
