Blue Badge Renewal: When to Reapply So Your Badge Doesn't Run Out

A Blue Badge usually lasts up to 3 years and doesn't renew itself. When your council lets you reapply (often 12 weeks before, sometimes only 6 to 8), what it costs in each UK nation, what to have ready, and a simple reminder plan.

A Blue Badge doesn't renew itself. When it runs out, you (or the person you help) have to make a fresh application to the council, and the council can take weeks to decide. Apply too late and there's a gap where the badge can't be used. Some councils won't even accept the application if you apply too early.

So the hard part isn't the form. It's applying inside the right window for your council, and remembering the date a badge expires three years after it was issued.

This guide covers how long a badge lasts, when you can reapply in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, what it costs, what to have ready, and what not to do if the badge expires before the new one arrives.

How long does a Blue Badge last?

According to GOV.UK, a Blue Badge usually lasts up to 3 years, and you need to renew it before it runs out. The expiry date is printed on the badge.

"Renewing" is really reapplying. Lewisham Council puts it plainly: "No, badges are not renewed. You must complete a new application form online" (Lewisham Council). Lincolnshire County Council adds that "You cannot extend a Blue Badge" (Lincolnshire County Council). Expect your eligibility to be looked at again each time.

When can I reapply for my Blue Badge?

This is the question most people get wrong, because the answer depends on your council. Here's how a few of them put it:

Council or nationWhen you can (or should) reapply
Scotland (mygov.scot)"At least 12 weeks before the expiry date"
Worcestershire"From twelve weeks before your Blue Badge is due to expire"
LewishamNot if the badge has "more than three months left before it expires"
East Sussex"Not until 6 to 8 weeks before your current badge expires"

Sources: mygov.scot, Worcestershire County Council, Lewisham Council, East Sussex County Council.

A safe rule of thumb: about 12 weeks (three months) before the expiry date, check your own council's Blue Badge page and apply on the first day it allows. Your council is the one that issued the badge; its name is on it, or you can find it through GOV.UK.

Don't sit on it once the window opens. GOV.UK says councils usually make a decision within 12 weeks, so applying late in the window leaves little room for a request for more evidence or a slow month.

Does the council send a renewal reminder?

Some do, but it isn't something to rely on.

  • Lincolnshire says you will receive a reminder 12 weeks before the badge expires.
  • Lewisham says it will "endeavour" to email a reminder about 12 weeks before.
  • East Sussex simply says "We do not automatically renew badges."

Reminders also depend on the council having your current email or address. If you've moved, changed email, or the badge belongs to a parent whose post you don't see, the reminder may never reach the person who needs it. Set your own.

How much does a Blue Badge cost?

From GOV.UK and the Scottish and Northern Irish government sites:

  • England: up to £10 (set by your council)
  • Scotland: most councils charge £20 (mygov.scot)
  • Wales: free
  • Northern Ireland: £10, applied for through nidirect, which says you should hear the outcome "within six to eight weeks"

Some councils take the fee only once the application is approved. East Sussex, for example, contacts you to pay after a successful renewal. Keep an eye out for that request so it doesn't hold things up.

What you need to renew a Blue Badge

GOV.UK lists what to have ready before you start the online form:

  • a recent digital photo of your head and shoulders
  • proof of identity, such as a birth certificate, passport or driving licence
  • proof of address, such as a Council Tax bill or a government letter
  • proof of benefits, if you get any (for example, your latest award letter)
  • your National Insurance number, if you have one
  • the details of your current Blue Badge

Worcestershire also notes you may need a new photo "if your appearance has altered since your last badge was issued". Medical evidence may be requested too. You can save the online form and come back to it, so you don't have to collect everything in one sitting.

Gathering these is the step that usually causes the delay, especially when you're applying for a parent. Starting a week or two before the window opens means you can apply on day one.

Can I use my Blue Badge after it expires?

No. East Sussex County Council says "You must not use an expired Blue Badge under any circumstances," and Lincolnshire warns that using an expired badge may result in a fine. Blue Badge misuse is a criminal offence that "could lead to a £1,000 fine and confiscation of the badge" (London Borough of Bromley).

Councils such as East Sussex and Bromley also ask you to send the expired badge back to the council that issued it once you no longer need it.

If your badge is about to expire and you've had no decision, contact your council before the date rather than after. And don't leave the old badge on the dashboard "just in case": take it out of the car on the expiry date.

A simple Blue Badge renewal reminder plan

Work backwards from the expiry date on the badge. For a badge that expires on, say, 31 March:

WhenReminder
About 14 weeks before (late December)"Blue Badge expires 31 March. Check the council's renewal window. Find a recent photo, proof of address and the latest benefit letter."
The day the window opens (12 weeks before for many councils)"Apply for the Blue Badge renewal today. Have the current badge number ready."
6 weeks before"Heard back about the Blue Badge? If not, call the council."
2 weeks before"Has the council asked for the fee or more evidence? Has the new badge arrived?"
The expiry date"Old Blue Badge expires today. Take it out of the car and send it back to the council."

If you look after a parent's paperwork, it helps to write their badge's expiry date down the next time you're with them. It's easy to forget that a document issued three years ago is due again. Our guide to managing a parent's affairs and finances covers the other dates worth keeping track of. If they also drive, the photocard driving licence has its own renewal date.

How ReminderIt can help

A Blue Badge renewal comes round only every three years, which is exactly why it gets forgotten. ReminderIt rings your phone at the time you choose and reads your reminder out in a natural voice: "Your Blue Badge renewal window opens today. Apply on the council website." If you miss the call, the reminder comes through on WhatsApp too.

You can set it up by sending a WhatsApp message such as "Call me on 6 January at 10am to apply for my Blue Badge renewal", or on the website. One-off reminders can be set up to a year ahead, so if the badge has longer left, set them once it's within a year of the expiry date.

If the badge belongs to your mum or dad, you can have the reminder ring their phone instead, or as well. They confirm their number once with a short verification call, so nobody gets calls they didn't agree to. See how to set a reminder for someone else.

There's a 7-day free trial. On a UK number the trial includes 3 reminder calls, because calls to the UK cost more (in most countries it's 7). After that it's one plan: US$7 a month, or ₹299 a month in India.

The short answer

A Blue Badge usually lasts up to 3 years and doesn't renew automatically: you have to reapply. Most councils let you apply about 12 weeks before it expires, but some only from 6 to 8 weeks before, and some won't take an application with more than three months left, so check your council's page. It costs up to £10 in England, £20 with most Scottish councils, £10 in Northern Ireland and nothing in Wales. Have a recent photo, ID, proof of address, benefit letters and your current badge details ready. Never use the badge after it expires; send it back to the council.
