PR Card Renewal in Canada: The 9-Month Rule and When to Apply
IRCC says to renew your PR card once it will expire in less than 9 months. What an expired card means for your status and travel, the $50 fee, the 730-day rule, and the reminders that keep it from sneaking up on you.

The short answer: IRCC says to renew your Canadian permanent resident (PR) card once it will expire in less than 9 months, or if it has already expired (IRCC). Most cards last 5 years, so the renewal window opens about four years and three months after the card was issued. That's long enough that almost everyone forgets the date.
Forgetting usually doesn't cost you your status. It costs you time, money and sometimes a trip. Here's how the rule works, what an expired card actually means, and a short set of reminders that keeps it from sneaking up on you.
The rules in one place
- When to apply: when your card "will expire in less than 9 months or if it has expired" (IRCC). There's no reason to wait until the last few weeks.
- How long a card lasts: "A PR card is usually valid for 5 years. In some cases, it's valid for only 1 year." Check the expiry date printed on your own card rather than assuming (IRCC).
- How to apply: most people apply online through IRCC's Permanent Residence Portal. The fee is paid separately online, and you upload the receipt with your application (IRCC).
- Fee: $50 for a PR card, according to IRCC's fee list.
- You have to be in Canada: IRCC doesn't mail PR cards outside Canada (IRCC eligibility).
- Speed: urgent processing is available in some circumstances, but IRCC says the minimum is 3 weeks and it can't guarantee you'll get your card on time. Check IRCC's current processing times before you plan anything around a date.
Your card expires. Your status doesn't.
This is the part people worry about most. IRCC is direct about it: "You won't lose your PR status when your PR card expires" (IRCC, Understand PR status).
What an expired card does affect is getting back into Canada. The card is the document you show to board a plane, bus, boat or train home. If you're outside Canada without a valid PR card, you need to apply for a permanent resident travel document (PRTD) before you can return by commercial transport. That's another application, another $50 fee, and waiting abroad while it's processed.
So the real deadline isn't the expiry date. It's your next trip abroad. If you're flying out in March and your card expires in May, renew now. The card can't be mailed to you while you're away, so you need to be home when it arrives.
The 730-day rule behind it
Keeping PR status has one main condition: "you must have been in Canada for at least 730 days during the last five years." The days don't need to be continuous, and IRCC says some of your time outside Canada may count towards them (IRCC).
Your trips abroad also matter for the renewal itself. IRCC says of your trip records: "You'll need this information when you apply for a new Permanent Residence card", and again when you apply for citizenship. That's much easier if you've kept track as you go. IRCC offers a free travel journal for recording trips outside Canada: departure and return dates, where you went and why.
If you've spent long stretches abroad and aren't sure you meet the 730 days, get advice before you apply rather than after.
The reminders worth setting
Since the dates are years apart, a few reminders do most of the work:
- The day the window opens. Take the expiry date off your card and count back 9 months. Set a reminder for that day: "PR card renewal window is open. Start the application."
- A backstop 3 months later. If life got in the way, this is the one that catches it, with about 6 months still left on the card.
- Before you book any trip abroad. Check that the card is valid until after the day you fly home, not just the day you leave.
- After every trip. Write the dates in your travel journal the day you land, while the boarding passes are still in your email.
- After you apply. A reminder every few weeks to check the application status in the portal, and to make sure IRCC has your current address.
If your family members are permanent residents too, check each card. Cards issued at different times expire at different times, and a child's card is easy to miss.
Let your phone ring for it
A calendar alert set four years ago is easy to dismiss. ReminderIt calls your phone at the time you choose and reads your reminder out loud. If you miss the call, the reminder comes to you on WhatsApp instead. You can set reminders up just by messaging ReminderIt on WhatsApp, for example:
- "Call me on 3 February 2027 at 7 pm: my PR card renewal window is open. Pay the fee and apply in the portal."
- "Call me on 3 May 2027 at 7 pm: have I applied for my PR card renewal yet?"
- "Call me every first Sunday of the month at 10 am: check my PR card application status."
If you're keeping track of a partner's or parent's card, you can add them as someone you remind, so the call goes to their phone. They get a short verification call first to confirm they're happy to receive reminders.
There's a 7-day free trial with 7 reminder calls (3 if your number is in a country where calls cost more to place). After that, it's one plan at $7 a month (₹299 in India).

The short answer
Renew your Canadian PR card once it will expire in less than 9 months, online through the PR Portal, for a $50 fee. Most cards are valid for 5 years, some for 1. An expired card doesn't end your PR status, but you'll need a PR travel document to fly home if you're abroad without a valid card, and IRCC won't mail a new card outside Canada. Count back 9 months from the date on your card, set a reminder for that day, and keep a record of your trips so the 730-day question is easy to answer.
