Keep your savings challenge going past week eleven
52-week and no-spend challenges fizzle when the weekly transfer is forgotten. Pick one you can sustain and make the transfer day hard to miss.

Saving challenges are everywhere at the start of the year: the 52-week challenge, "no-spend" weeks, saving every note of a certain value you're handed. They're popular for a good reason. They turn a vague goal like "save more" into something you can actually tick off.
They also have a well-known weak spot. Most challenges depend on doing something small, on a set day, over and over for months. Week three goes fine. Week eleven, when you're busy or it's a tight month, is where it quietly stops.
Why saving challenges fizzle out
It's rarely a lack of motivation. More often it's one of these:
- The transfer is a separate task. You intend to move the money on Sunday, then Sunday gets busy.
- Missing one week breaks the chain. Once you've skipped, catching up feels harder than just starting over "next month".
- The amounts grow. In the classic 52-week challenge, where you save a little more each week, the later weeks ask for much more than the early ones.
- It's invisible. Unlike a fitness challenge, you don't see or feel your progress day to day.
This article isn't financial advice, and the right amount to save depends entirely on your situation. It's about the practical side: picking a challenge that fits your life, and making sure the small, repeated action actually happens.
Choose a challenge you can sustain
A few common formats:
- The fixed weekly amount. Move the same amount every week. Simple, predictable and easy to budget for.
- The 52-week climb. Save an amount equal to the week number, so week 1 is 1, week 2 is 2, and so on, in whatever currency you use. The total grows quickly, and the December weeks are heavy.
- The reverse 52-week climb. Start with the big amounts in January when motivation is high, and get easier as the year goes on. Many people find this easier around the holidays.
- The monthly round-up. On a set date each month, move a fixed amount, or whatever's left in your current account above a certain figure.
- The no-spend days. Pick certain days of the week where you only spend on essentials.
Pick the one you'd still be happy doing in a busy November. A smaller challenge you finish beats an ambitious one you abandon.
Make the transfer the only task
The simpler the action, the more likely you'll do it. Some ways to reduce friction:
- Use a separate savings account or pot, so the money is out of sight and easy to track.
- Pick one transfer day that's the same every week, ideally the day after you get paid.
- Keep a tracker in a notes app or on a printed sheet on the fridge. Ticking off a box is oddly motivating.
- Consider an automatic transfer for the fixed part, if your bank allows it, and use a reminder for the part that changes.
Sample reminder wording
Saving challenges fit weekly and monthly reminders naturally. Some examples:
- "Remind me every Sunday at 7pm: move this week's savings. Check the tracker for the amount."
- "Remind me on the 1st of every month at 9am: move the monthly savings amount into the holiday pot."
- "Remind me on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8am: no-spend day today. Packed lunch, no coffee shop."
- "Remind me every 2 weeks on Friday at 6pm: payday transfer to savings, then update the chart on the fridge."
- "Remind me on 30 June at 7pm: halfway through the savings challenge. Check the total and adjust if needed."
That mid-year check is worth adding. It's a moment to celebrate progress, or to change the plan if the amounts aren't working, rather than giving up quietly.
What to do when you miss a week
You will miss one at some point. Plan for it now so it doesn't end the challenge:
- Catch up in small steps. Add a little extra to the next few weeks rather than doubling up in one go.
- Or simply skip it. A challenge with one missed week is still far better than no challenge.
- Adjust the amounts. If the climbing amounts are too steep, switch to a fixed amount for the rest of the year.
- Don't restart from zero. Keep the money you've already saved where it is and carry on.
Doing it together
Saving is often easier with company. A few ideas:
- With a partner: agree a shared goal, like a holiday or a deposit, and take turns doing the weekly transfer.
- With children: a simple version of the challenge, using a jar and small amounts, is a lovely way to teach saving. Make the counting a weekly ritual.
- With friends: a light-touch group check-in once a month keeps everyone going without making it competitive.
A saving-challenge checklist
- Challenge chosen that fits your budget and calendar
- Separate savings account or pot set up
- Transfer day chosen, ideally just after payday
- Weekly or monthly reminder set
- Tracker ready, on paper or on your phone
- Mid-year check-in reminder set
- A plan for what to do if you miss a week
How ReminderIt keeps the streak going
The weekly transfer is a two-minute task. The hard part is remembering it on a busy Sunday evening. A reminder that rings your phone is much harder to wave away than a silent banner on the lock screen.
With ReminderIt you set this up by messaging us on WhatsApp in plain words: "Remind me every Sunday at 7pm to move this week's savings." At 7pm your phone rings, a friendly voice reads out your reminder, and a WhatsApp message arrives with Done and Snooze buttons. Tapping Done is a satisfying little moment in itself. If you miss the call, the message is still there, and ReminderIt tries once more about five minutes later.
Some tips:
- Put the amount or the tracker in the reminder, so the call tells you exactly what to do.
- Remind your saving partner too. You can add up to five people. They accept once, and then the reminder rings their phone as well.
- Prefer a quieter nudge? If you'd rather not get a call on a Sunday evening, set that one to arrive by WhatsApp only.
- Pause, don't quit. If money is tight for a month, send "pause 1" and resume when you're ready, instead of abandoning the whole thing.
A saving challenge is really just a promise to your future self, repeated every week. A well-timed call helps you keep it.
