Reminders for Seasonal Home Maintenance (The Annual Checklist That Protects Your Home)
Home maintenance is chronically under-done because nobody reminds you until something breaks. A seasonal reminder schedule catches problems before they become expensive.

Most home maintenance problems — a blocked gutter that causes damp, a boiler that fails in January, a roof tile that lets in water — start small and become expensive because they're not caught early. The challenge is that these tasks don't announce themselves and they're not urgent until they become a crisis. A seasonal reminder schedule, covering the specific tasks appropriate to each time of year, prevents the 'we should have done that months ago' situation.
Spring reminders (March–April)
Spring is the time to check what winter damage has accumulated and prepare for warmer months. Check external walls and roof for winter damage (cracked render, missing or slipped tiles), inspect and clear gutters after winter leaf fall, check exterior paintwork and window seals for moisture damage, service the garden — first mow, prune dead growth from winter, prepare raised beds.
Inside: deep clean the kitchen (behind appliances, extractor fan filters), test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, replace batteries if needed, service or check garden equipment before it's needed. Set a recurring annual reminder for mid-March: 'Spring home check — gutters, roof, external walls, garden prep.'
Summer reminders (June–July)
Summer is maintenance season for the exterior. Touch up external paintwork while the weather is dry and warm (paint needs warmth to cure properly), treat timber decking or fencing, check roof and chimney if you have one, clean external windows, service outdoor furniture and equipment.
It's also the right time to book your boiler service — before the autumn rush, when engineers are less busy and appointments are easier to get. Set a July reminder: 'Book boiler service now — before October when everyone books at once.'
Autumn reminders (September–October)
Autumn is preparation season for winter. Clear gutters of autumn leaves (ideally twice — mid and late October), lag external pipes if there's a risk of freezing, check the boiler and radiators (bleed if needed, check pressure), test central heating before you need it, check roof before the first storms, draught-proof windows and doors.
Inside: check the loft insulation and draught-proofing, service the chimney if you use an open fire, stock up on grit or salt if you're in a freeze-prone area. Set a September reminder: 'Autumn home prep — gutters, boiler check, heating test, draught-proofing.'
Winter reminders (December–January)
Winter maintenance focuses on protecting against freeze damage and keeping systems running. Know where your stopcock is in case a pipe bursts (and make sure it works — they seize up if not used). Check and insulate any exposed outdoor pipes. Keep a path and steps clear of ice. Check the loft if there's been snow — heavy snow needs monitoring.
January is a good time for planning: get quotes for any maintenance work identified in the autumn, book any tradespeople for spring projects before the busy season. Set a January reminder: 'Winter home check — stopcock, exposed pipes, any damage from storms or ice.'
