Reminders for braces and clear aligners: wear, clean and swap

Aligners only work while they're in, and braces need extra cleaning and elastics. Daily reminders keep orthodontic treatment on track.

Orthodontic treatment asks a lot of your memory. With fixed braces there are extra cleaning steps, elastics to change, foods to avoid and appointments to keep. With clear aligners there's the wear time, the trays to swap on schedule, and the constant in-and-out around every meal.

The treatment plan only works if the small things happen every day, often for a year or more. And the small things are exactly what slips when life gets busy, whether you're a teenager juggling school or an adult juggling work.

This guide covers the routines that matter and how to make them automatic. As always, your orthodontist's instructions come first. If anything here differs from what you've been told, go with them.

Clear aligners: the wear-time problem

Clear aligners only move teeth while they're in your mouth. Most orthodontists ask patients to wear them for most of the day and night, taking them out only to eat, drink anything other than water, and clean. Your orthodontist will tell you the exact number of hours they want.

The challenge is that aligners come out several times a day, and it's easy to forget to put them back. A long lunch, an afternoon coffee, a dinner out. An hour here and there adds up.

Reminders that help:

  • After meals: "Lunch done? Brush or rinse, then aligners back in."
  • Afternoon coffee: "Aligners back in after your coffee."
  • Before bed: "Clean your aligners and put them in for the night."

If you tend to eat at similar times each day, a reminder about 30 to 45 minutes after each usual mealtime works well. It catches the moment when you've finished eating but haven't yet remembered to put them back.

Swapping to the next set of trays

Most aligner plans move you to a new set of trays on a fixed schedule, such as every week or every two weeks, depending on your treatment. Swapping late slows treatment down; swapping early can mean the teeth aren't ready.

Set a recurring reminder on your swap day:

  • "Swap to aligner set 7 tonight. Keep set 6 in the case as a backup."
  • "Tray change today. Note the new number in your tracker."

Keeping the previous set is a common recommendation in case the new set gets lost or broken, but check with your orthodontist what they'd like you to do.

Fixed braces: the daily routine

Braces bring their own list of things to remember:

  • Cleaning around the brackets and wires, which takes longer than normal brushing. Many orthodontists recommend small interdental brushes or a water flosser alongside regular brushing.
  • Elastics (rubber bands), if you've been given them. These often need to be worn most of the day and changed regularly, and they only work if they're actually in.
  • Food rules, such as avoiding hard, sticky or chewy foods that can break brackets.
  • Wax for any spot that's rubbing, especially after an adjustment.

Useful reminder wording:

  • "Evening clean: brush, interdental brushes around every bracket, then rinse."
  • "Change your elastics now. Fresh pair in the case."
  • "Popcorn night? Maybe not. Brackets are expensive to fix."

Appointments and repairs

Orthodontic treatment usually involves regular check-ups every few weeks or months. These are easy to miss because they're far apart and often during school or work hours.

  • Set a reminder a couple of days before each appointment and again on the morning.
  • Include the time and anything to bring, such as the aligner case or a list of questions.
  • If a bracket breaks or a wire starts poking, set a reminder to call the clinic when it opens, rather than trusting yourself to remember.

Retainers after treatment

When the braces come off or the last aligner is done, most people are given a retainer to hold the teeth in their new position. This is where many people get relaxed, because the "real" treatment feels finished.

Your orthodontist will tell you how often to wear it. Whatever the schedule, a nightly reminder helps: "Retainer in before sleep."

Teens and orthodontics

Plenty of orthodontic patients are teenagers, and plenty of parents end up as the reminder system. That can turn into nagging very quickly.

A better approach is to agree a few reminders together, so the teenager owns them:

  • One after school: "Aligners back in after your snack."
  • One at bedtime: "Clean and put aligners in. Brush round the brackets."
  • One on swap day: "New trays tonight."

The reminder does the reminding, and you don't have to.

A simple orthodontic routine

Aligners:

  1. Out to eat, back in within 30 to 45 minutes.
  2. Brush or rinse before putting them back.
  3. Clean the aligners morning and night.
  4. Swap trays on schedule, noting the set number.

Braces:

  1. Thorough clean morning and night, with interdental brushes.
  2. Elastics changed and worn as instructed.
  3. Avoid foods your orthodontist warned you about.
  4. Call the clinic about any breakages.

How ReminderIt helps

The easiest reminder to ignore is a silent notification during lunch with friends. ReminderIt rings your phone at the times you choose and reads your reminder aloud in a warm, natural voice, and sends the same reminder on WhatsApp with Done and Snooze buttons. If you miss the call, ReminderIt tries once more about five minutes later.

For small daily nudges, like "aligners back in", you might prefer WhatsApp only and keep calls for the ones you really can't skip, such as the evening clean or appointment day. You can choose calls and WhatsApp, calls only or WhatsApp only for each reminder.

Set it up by chatting on WhatsApp in plain words:

  • "Remind me every day at 1:45pm to put my aligners back in."
  • "Remind me every 2 weeks on Sunday at 8pm to swap to the next aligner set."
  • "Remind me on 12 November at 8am: orthodontist at 3:30pm."

You can also send a photo of your appointment card and ReminderIt will turn it into a reminder for you to confirm. Parents can add a teenager as one of their people, so reminders reach the teen's phone once they've accepted, and you can get an alert if they miss a call.
