Dengue Prevention at Home: The Weekly 10-Minute Dry Day Check
The dengue mosquito breeds in clean water that stands for a week in your own home. Where to look, how to do the weekly 10-minute dry day check, biting times, warning signs, and how to make the check stick.

The mosquito that spreads dengue does not breed in drains or dirty water. It breeds in clean water that has been standing in your own home for about a week: the cooler, the tray under a plant pot, the money plant bottle, a bucket on the balcony. The National Centre for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC) says the dengue mosquito "takes one week to become adult from egg."
That one week is the whole strategy. If every container that holds water is emptied, scrubbed and dried at least once a week, the mosquitoes that hatch in your house never get to fly. This is why municipal corporations ask households to keep a weekly "dry day", and why the most useful thing you can do about dengue this October is make that check happen every single week until the season ends.
This guide covers where to look, how to do the check properly, when the mosquito bites, the warning signs that mean a hospital visit, and how to make the weekly check stick.
This is general information from the NCVBDC (Ministry of Health and Family Welfare) and the World Health Organization. It is not medical advice. If you or someone in your family has a fever, see a doctor.
Why October matters
Dengue in India follows the monsoon. A 2025 study in Scientific Reports found that dengue deaths in Pune were low from December to May, began to rise after the monsoon arrived in June, and peaked in November. The water left behind by the rains, in coolers, pots, tyres and rooftops, keeps the mosquitoes breeding well after the rain stops.
The 2026 season is following that pattern. In Delhi, the Municipal Corporation recorded 432 dengue cases by mid-September, with September already the worst month of the year so far. Civic teams had inspected more than 2.79 crore houses and found mosquito larvae in about 1.47 lakh of them.
So the weekly check is not a monsoon-only job. Keep it going through October and November, until cases fall away in December.
Where the dengue mosquito breeds at home
The NCVBDC lists the places where Aedes mosquitoes breed: any container "in which water stagnates for more than a week." Its list includes coolers, tanks, tyres, pitchers, money plant bottles and lucky bamboo pots. In and around a typical Indian home, that means checking:
| Place | What to do |
|---|---|
| Desert cooler | Empty, scrub the tank, dry it, then refill. If you have stopped using it for the season, empty it, dry it and keep it dry. |
| Trays under flower pots | Empty and wipe dry. |
| Money plant bottles, lucky bamboo pots | Change the water and scrub the inside of the container. |
| Buckets, drums, pitchers (matkas) | Empty and scrub, or cover with a tight lid. |
| Overhead and underground tanks | Check the lid fits tightly and has no gaps. |
| Fridge drip tray | Empty and wipe. |
| Pet water bowls, bird baths | Change the water and scrub. |
| Old tyres, broken pots, coconut shells, junk on the roof or balcony | Throw away, or turn over and store so they cannot collect water. |
| Roof, window ledges, parapet, AC outlet | Look for puddles and blocked spots where water collects. |
Two points make the difference between a check that works and one that does not.
Scrub, do not just tip out. The NCVBDC advice is "emptying, cleaning by scrubbing and drying water coolers at least once a week before refilling." The Scientific Reports study notes that mosquito eggs can survive drying out for up to eight months, so a container that is only tipped out and refilled may still hold eggs. Scrub the inside before you refill.
Do it on the same day every week. One week is the window. A check every ten days, or "whenever I remember", gives some containers enough time to produce adult mosquitoes.
The 10-minute weekly dry day check
Delhi's "10 hafte, 10 baje, 10 minute" campaign was built around exactly this: ten minutes, at ten o'clock every Sunday, for ten weeks, checking your own home for standing water. You can use the same idea in any city. Pick a day and a time, and go round the house in the same order each week:
- Balcony and terrace. Plant trays, buckets, anything that collected rain, the roof drain.
- Cooler. Empty, scrub, dry, refill (or keep it dry if not in use).
- Kitchen. Fridge drip tray, stored water vessels, lids.
- Bathroom. Buckets and tubs; keep them upside down if not in use.
- Indoor plants. Money plant bottles, lucky bamboo, vase water.
- Outside the door. Pet bowls, broken pots, anything that holds water.
If you live in a housing society or apartment block, raise the shared spaces with your RWA: water tank lids, the terrace, construction areas and the parking basement are common breeding spots that no single flat owns. The NCVBDC notes that major municipal corporations enforce civic bylaws under which households can be fined if breeding is found.
When the dengue mosquito bites
Unlike the mosquitoes that bite at night, the dengue mosquito bites during the day. The NCVBDC says it bites "usually in morning (8-10 am) & afternoon (3-5 pm) hours," and that it rests indoors in dark corners, under furniture and beds, and among dark clothes hanging up.
What helps, according to WHO and NCVBDC:
- Clothes that cover your arms and legs, especially in the morning and late afternoon.
- Mosquito repellent; WHO lists repellents containing DEET, picaridin or IR3535.
- Mosquito nets for anyone who sleeps during the day: babies, older relatives, people who work night shifts.
- Window and door screens, coils and vaporisers.
Symptoms, and the warning signs that mean hospital
According to WHO, many people with dengue have mild symptoms or none. When symptoms appear, they usually start 4 to 10 days after infection and last 2 to 7 days. They include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, swollen glands and a rash.
The dangerous stage often comes after the fever goes down. WHO says to seek care immediately for:
- severe stomach pain
- vomiting that will not stop
- fast breathing
- bleeding gums or nose
- blood in vomit or stool
- extreme tiredness or restlessness
- feeling very thirsty, or pale, cold skin
People who have had dengue before are at greater risk of severe dengue if they catch it again.
On medicines: WHO says paracetamol is used for pain and fever, and that ibuprofen and aspirin should be avoided because they can increase the risk of bleeding. Rest and drink plenty of fluids, and check with a doctor rather than self-treating a fever during dengue season.
Why the weekly check gets skipped
Nobody decides to let the cooler breed mosquitoes. What happens is that the first two Sundays go well, the third Sunday has a wedding, and by the fifth week nobody remembers. A cooler left alone for a fortnight in October is long enough.
This is a job that needs a fixed reminder, not good intentions:
| When | Reminder |
|---|---|
| Every week, same day and time, until the end of November | The 10-minute dry day check: cooler, plant trays, buckets, tanks, terrace. |
| Every morning, if someone in the house has a fever | Check for warning signs, especially once the fever drops; give fluids. |
| Once, now | Ask your RWA or building manager when the tanks and terrace were last checked. |
| For an elderly parent living alone | A weekly reminder to their phone, so their cooler and plant trays get checked too. |
How ReminderIt can help
ReminderIt calls your phone at the time you choose and reads out your reminder in a natural voice. For example: "It's Sunday, 10 o'clock. Dengue check: empty and scrub the cooler, plant trays, buckets, and look at the terrace." If you miss the call, the reminder comes on WhatsApp instead.
You can set it up by sending a WhatsApp message such as "Call me every Sunday at 10am to do the dengue check". There is no app to install. The call can be in Hindi and other Indian languages as well as English. When the season ends, pause the reminder and start it again after next year's monsoon.
You can also set the same reminder for a parent's phone. They confirm their number with a short verification call first, so nobody receives calls they did not agree to.
There is a 7-day free trial with 7 reminder calls (3 if your number is in a country where calls cost more). After that it is one plan: ₹299 a month in India, or $7 a month elsewhere.
The short answer
The dengue mosquito breeds in clean water that stands for about a week in and around your home: coolers, plant trays, money plant bottles, buckets, tanks, tyres and junk on the roof. Because it takes about one week to grow from egg to adult, emptying, scrubbing and drying every container once a week, on the same day each week, breaks the cycle. Keep going through November, when the post-monsoon season usually peaks. Protect yourself during the day, especially 8 to 10 am and 3 to 5 pm. If someone has a fever, watch for warning signs after the fever falls, use paracetamol rather than ibuprofen or aspirin, and see a doctor.
